Frequently Asked Questions

How do we purchase your honey?

Our goal is to teach our kids how to sell and run a business, so for now, we want them to directly sell to you. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram where we will post harvest times and sale dates at our front yard stand. You can also purchase from our clinic, BayouMD Weight Loss and Wellness in Houma.

How do bees make honey?

Honey is the sweet fluid produced by honey bees from the nectar of flowers. Worker honey bees transform the floral nectar that they gather into honey by adding enzymes to the nectar and reducing the moisture.

How do you collect honey from bees?

This is our most asked question! The short answer goes like this: The bees fill frames with honey. We take these frames and run them through a special centrifuge called a honey extractor, where the honey gets thrown out of the frames and pumped into barrels. From there, the honey is poured into beautiful little jars.

How long does honey last?

As long as honey is sealed in containers, it can remain stable for decades and even centuries! 3000 year old honey retrieved from Egyptian tombs is still unspoiled and ready for human consumption! However, if exposed to air and moisture honey may collect yeast and begin to ferment.

Is your honey raw? Is it pasteurized?

Our honey is raw and jarred in its purest form. It is retains natural enzymes and pollen. Our honey is never cooked, filtered, pasteurized, or processed in any way. You may notice the small layer of wax or pollen that floats to the top of the honey, that is something you don’t see in most store bought honey. Sometimes, when exposed to air or moisture in may crystalize. Large industrial honey packers heat honey to a very high temperature to pasteurize it and then extract all of the naturally occurring pollen and other nutrients leaving only fructose and glucose--the original sugar molecules of honey. This excessive processing causes honey to unnaturally remain liquid for many months or even years. Unpasteurized honey may lead to infant botulism, so we recommend not consuming honey if <1 year old.

What primary services do you offer?

We raise bees and produce and jar their honey and honeycomb. Each jar of honey is unpasteurized, raw, and hand filled by our family. We are also willing to remove any outdoor swarm of bees from your property.

How do you determine the price of honey?

Price is about quality, quantity, and value. We believe our product is of the highest quality. Honey is typically sold by weight rather than volume and is heavier than water (the standard for “fluid ounces”). That is why one cup of water is considered eight fluid ounces, but one cup of honey will actually weigh 12 ounces. We use the USDA Honey Report to help us determine a price point, decide how fancy we want our packaging to to look, then finally set the price. Bottom line: our prices will fluctuate, but the quality of the honey will always remain the same!

What is honeycomb?

Honeycomb is the healthiest and purest form of honey available. Honeycomb is a natural product made by bees to store their larvae, honey, and pollen. You can eat the whole honeycomb, including the honey and waxy cells surrounding it. The raw honey has a more textured consistency than filtered honey. In addition, the waxy cells can be chewed as a gum.  Each cell of honeycomb is filled with the concentrated nectar of thousands of flowers.

A few facts about bees:

A single honeybee will only produce approximately 1/12 teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.

To make one pound of honey, the bees in the colony must visit 2 million flowers, fly over 55,000 miles and will be the lifetime work of approximately 768 bees.
